Dear High School Orchestra Parents and Students,
The district orchestra festival this year is on February 28th at East Lansing High School. Each orchestra will play three prepared selections and sight-read one piece that they have never seen. Four expert judges will grade the orchestra’s performance in five categories and these grades are averaged for an overall numerical rating. Festival is basically the MEAP test for orchestra.
The Chamber Orchestra will play on Friday, February 28th at 9:30 am. Chamber members should report to the East Lansing High School Orchestra Room at 8:00 am in uniform. Students will need to bring their uniforms to school that morning.
The Encore Strings will play on Friday, February 28th at 11:30 am. The students will be released from class around 10:00 am to change. Students will need to bring their uniforms to school that morning.
The Symphonic Orchestra will play on Friday, February 28th at 2:40 pm. The students will be released from class around 1:00 pm to change. Students will need to bring their uniforms to school that morning.
Parents are highly encouraged to come hear their student’s orchestra perform. It is always easier to give a great performance when there are friendly faces in the audience. All aspects of the festival are open to the public, however there is no videotaping allowed in the sight-reading room.
Participation in festival is an integral and required part of the orchestra curriculum. Thank you for having your student (in uniform) present for this very important event. You will be amazed at what you will hear from all three orchestras.
A Pre-festival concert will be held this Thursday, February 20th beginning at 6:30pm. There are a total of five groups performing on this concert. It will begin with the Symphonic Band, followed by the Symphonic Orchestra, Concert Band, Chamber Orchestra, and Encore Strings. Please feel free to only attend your student's portion of the concert. Students may leave when they are done performing.
In order to host this event, we must come together as a band and orchestra community of volunteers to show off our wonderful facility and showcase all participating students. Donations of your time and food are needed. Listed below are descriptions of all volunteer opportunities as well as links to take you to the sign up.
If you're able to volunteer, please sign up for a shift that is NOT during your child's performance. We'd like to have as many parents in the audience as possible during our performances. Thank you so much!
