Curriculum
What will my child learn as a 6th Grade Orchestra Student?
6th Grade Orchestra is a year-long, beginning level introduction into the performance of string instruments: violin, viola, cello, and bass. The fundamentals of string playing (Ex: holding the instrument, bow, instrument care, note reading) will be the primary focus of the year. In the beginning of the year, we will learn music by rote (without reading music), and then move towards note reading through the Essential Elements Book 1. Another aspect of 6th Grade Orchestra is playing together in a group - we learn what it means to listen and work as a team.
What type of music will my child learn to play?
Students learn a repertoire of folk tunes drawn from sources such as the Suzuki Method and the American tradition of bluegrass and fiddling and jazz. More contemporary music may be learned in the 2nd semester.
