Encore Strings (audition only)
The Encore Strings is an advanced ensemble and is treated like an AP level class. It is an “in addition to” regular orchestra class. In other words, you must be in either Chamber (5th hour) or Symphonic (4th hour) orchestra to be eligible for Encore. We do not rehearse techniques or work in method books and there are no playing tests. Our goal is to play many different genres of music at a very high level and have lots of fun doing it. It is your responsibility to learn your parts outside of our rehearsals. With our limited rehearsal time, there is more emphasis on members of the ensemble knowing the music before rehearsal. Furthermore, there are usually a few extra performances throughout the school year. In past years, these have included; guest performances, ELHS Jazz Night, Michigan Music Conference Performance, Baccalaureate, ELEF functions or other community events, and our very popular locker common concerts. Members of Encore have also performed with YouTube stars like The Piano Guys and Charles Yang. I never know what new opportunities might come up from year to year.
The ensemble rehearses from 2:45-3:30pm on Mondays and 6:50am-7:30am on Thursdays during the school year. The class begins the last week of September and ends sometime in May. I realize that there could be some potential conflicts with sports on Mondays in the Fall and Spring. We are able to work through these with good communication between you, me, and your coaches. You will receive a .5 credit for the class each year. There is no need to re-audition each year, you will move up in chairs as older students graduate.
