Dear High School Orchestra Parents and Students, The district orchestra festival this year is on February 28th and March 1st at Okemos High School. Each orchestra will play three prepared numbers and sight-read one number that they have never seen. Four expert judges will grade the orchestra’s performance in five categories and these grades are averaged for an overall numerical rating. Festival is basically the MEAP test for orchestra. The Chamber Orchestra will play on Thursday, February 28th at 1:20 pm. Chamber members should report to the East Lansing High School Orchestra Room at 11:45 am in uniform. Students will need to bring their uniforms to school that Thursday morning. The bus will depart for Okemos at 12:00 pm. We should return to the school by 3:00 pm The Symphonic Orchestra will play on Thursday, February 28th at 4:00 pm. The students will be released from class around 2:00 pm to change. The buses will depart for Okemos at 2:30 pm. Students will need to bring their uniforms to school that Thursday morning. We should be returning to the HS around 5:30 pm. Students may leave from Okemos with a parent, but I will need to know this prior to the event in writing. Encore Strings will play on Friday, March 1st at 2:25 pm. The students will be released from class around 12:30 pm to change. The buses will depart for Okemos at 1:00 pm. Students will need to bring their uniforms to school that Friday morning. We should be returning to the HS around 4:00 pm. Students may leave from Okemos with a parent, but I will need to know this prior to the event in writing. *** I am in need of parent drivers to take basses and cellos to the festival site this year. I will need 1-2 drivers for Encore (1 bass, 5 cellos), 3-4 drivers for Chamber (3 basses, 7 cellos), and 2-3 drivers for Symphonic (3 basses, 5 cellos). If you can drive, please email me ASAP [email protected] ***** All students should come in uniform with all of their music and their instrument. Parents are highly encouraged to come hear their student’s orchestra perform. It is always easier to give a great performance when there are friendly faces in the audience. All aspects of the festival are open to the public, however there is no videotaping allowed in the sight-reading room. Participation in festival is an integral and required part of the orchestra curriculum. Thank you for having your student (in uniform) present for this very important event. You will be amazed at what you will hear from all three orchestras.
