On Friday, February 28th, all three high school orchestras performed at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra District VIII Festival. The festival was hosted at East Lansing High School. Here are the results:
Chamber Orchestra 1,1,1,1 = 1 Encore Strings 1,1,1,1 = 1 Symphonic Orchestra 1,1,1,1 = 1 All three orchestras received straight division 1 ratings, the highest ratings an ensemble can receive at this event. More importantly, all three orchestras gave energetic and inspiring performances. I want to thank all the students for their hard work and commitment to these performances. Your efforts really shined through at the festival. Bravo! Also, I would like to thank all the parents, students, administration, and support staff who help make our host site run for the day. We received nothing but positive comments from other directors, teachers, parents, and students. Once again, our site exceeded expectations. Thank you for your continued support of the orchestra and band programs in East Lansing.

Middle School Orchestra Festival Recap-
Well Middle School festival is completed for this school year and the orchestras played great. I am very proud of the musical performances the students’ gave at the festival. Our orchestras did an excellent job representing East Lansing throughout all aspects of the festival. Here is a recap of the ratings: 7th Grade Orchestra 1, 2, 1, 1 (Sight Reading)= Overall Division 1 8th Grade Orchestra 1, 1, 1, 1 (Sight Reading)= Overall Division 1 These are excellent scores, and I received many compliments from other teachers, students, and parents about the quality of our performances. Furthermore, all the orchestras did an outstanding job in the sight reading room. All students who attended the festival will receive a medal for their performance and the school will receive a plaque for each orchestra! I would like to thank all the students for their hard work over the last few months. We put in many hours rehearsing and preparing this music for our festival performances. I would also like to thank all the parents who helped transport instruments, jumped on board to ride the buses, or just attended the performances. It was great to have so much support for this event. Furthermore, a big thank you goes to Mr. Atkinson for arriving early, riding the bus, and helping out in lots of different ways during the festival! Finally, I would like to thank any private teachers who are teaching our students in anyway. We are lucky to have so many great supportive private instructors in the area. This really enhances the quality of all our music ensembles. ** Please bring me a blank CD with your name on it if you would like a copy of our festival performances. ** High School Orchestra Festival Recap-

FYI- Our MS orchestras will be attending festival on March 16 at Charlotte Center for the Performing Arts. Feb 19, 2013
Dear Middle School Orchestra Parents and Students, District orchestra festival is on Saturday, March 16th at Charlotte Center for the Performing Arts. Each orchestra will play three prepared numbers and sight-read one number that they have never seen. Four expert judges will grade the orchestra’s performance in five categories and these grades are averaged for an overall numerical rating. Festival is essentially the MEAP test for orchestra. The 7th grade orchestra will play on Saturday, March 16 at 9:25am. The 8th grade orchestra will play on Saturday March 16th at 10:55 am. All of the 7th and 8th grade orchestras members should report to Macdonald Middle School by 7:45 am in uniform on Saturday, March 16th. The busses will depart for Charlotte at 7:50 am. All of the students will be returning to Macdonald between 12:30-1:00 pm. Students should be on their best behavior while at the festival. There will be an opportunity to purchase some food in the cafeteria. Students should bring about $5.00. All students should come in uniform with all of their music and their instrument. Parents are highly encouraged to come to hear their student’s orchestra perform. It is always easier to give a great performance when there are friendly faces in the audience. All aspects of the festival are open to the public, however there is no videotaping allowed in the sight-reading room. Students may leave Charlotte with their parents, but I will need to know prior to the event in writing. Participation in festival is an integral and required part of the orchestra curriculum. Thank you for having your student (in uniform) present for this very important event. You will be amazed at what you will hear from both orchestras. Dear High School Orchestra Parents and Students,

This past Friday, the High School Encore Strings traveled to Charlotte High School to take part in the State Level Michigan School Band and Orchestra Festival. The students gave a very moving and musical performance. The judges agreed by giving the ensemble a straight overall division one rating. The students received straight A’s in every category from two judges and straight A+’s from the third judge! This is the highest possible rating an ensemble can receive from the MSBOA organization at any festival. The school will receive a plaque for the performance, and each student will receive a medal.
Congrats to all the students who performed at the MSBOA State Solo and Ensemble Festival this weekend. I received many nice compliments from the judges about what they heard from East Lansing students!
Also, bravo to all the students who made Willy Wonka such a huge success! I had fun watching from down in the "pit." Hope everyone involved had a good time! This past weekend we hosted the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association District VIII Band and Orchestra festival at the High School. This was our second year hosting the event.
We had over 1000 students and parents come from all over Mid Michigan to participate in the festival. The site ran very well. We had fantastic support from our parents, students, and support staff throughout the weekend. We received many positive comments from parents, judges, and students from the other districts. This event once again showcased the wonderful facilities we have in East Lansing! On top of hosting the event we had eight ensembles (around 300 students) participate in the festival. The results were as follows. 7th Grade Band (Mrs. Kroth) Division I rating 8th Grade Band (Mrs Kroth) Division I rating 7th Grade Orchestra (Mr. Rosin) Division I rating 8th Grade Orchestra (Mr. Rosin) Division I rating Concert Band (Mr. Larzelere) Division I rating Symphonic Band (Mr. Larzelere) Division I rating Encore Strings (Mr. Rosin) Division I rating Symphonic Orchestra (Mr. Rosin) Division I rating So, every ensemble received the highest rating given at this festival. The division I rating requires an overall rating of A in the combined categories. We are very proud of the hard work the students put into these outstanding musical performances. Thank you again for your continued support of the instrumental music programs in East Lansing, |
