High School Orchestra Festival Recap-
Well High School festival is completed for this school year and the orchestras played great. I am very proud of the musical performances the students’ gave at the festival. Our orchestras did an excellent job representing East Lansing throughout all aspects of the festival. Here is a recap of the ratings: Chamber 2, 2, 2, 1 (Sight Reading)= Overall Division 2 Symphonic 1, 1, 1, 1 (Sight Reading)= Overall Division 1 Encore Strings 1, 1, 1, 1 (Sight Reading) =Overall Division 1 These are excellent scores, and I received many compliments from other teachers, students, and parents about the quality of our performances. Furthermore, all the orchestras did an outstanding job in the sight reading room. I would like to thank all the students for their hard work over the last few months. We put in many hours rehearsing and preparing this music for our festival performances. I would also like to thank all the parents who helped transport instruments, jumped on board to ride the buses, or just attended the performances. It was great to have so much support for this event. Finally, I would like to thank any private teachers who are teaching our students in anyway. We are lucky to have so many great supportive private instructors in the area. This really enhances the quality of all our music ensembles. ** Please bring me a blank CD with your name on it if you would like a copy of our festival performances. ** Next up for the HS school orchestras: NY trip, Senior Solo prep, and Spring Concert prep. FYI- Our MS orchestras will be attending festival on March 16 at Charlotte Center for the Performing Arts.

I am very happy and excited to welcome Mr. Bryce Berry as our new 5-6 strings teacher. Check out a bit more about him below:)
A bit about Mr. Berry Mr. Berry is an extremely respected, well-known educator and musician in the East Lansing community. He is an excellent pianist, cellist, and singer and regularly performs as a singer/songwriter. Mr. Berry often writes his own music and songs to use while he works as a music educator. Many of them, such as the "Safe T Rap," "Parasaurolophus," and the "Turtle Song" are still used in the St. Johns and East Lansing schools where he has worked. His passion and talent for music earned him a vocal music scholarship at Michigan State University which he attended to earn a bachelor's degree in Music Performance. Subsequent to this coursework, Mr. Berry decided to change his focus to education, and worked as a paraprofessional in special education for four years. During this time he discovered a new passion: one for engaging students in learning, and challenging them to grow as learners as well as citizens. After his work in special education, Mr. Berry returned to MSU and graduated with a degree in Music Education in 2011. Since that time he has worked in the area as a musician and educator both in and out of the East Lansing schools. He also works as a private teacher in piano, cello and guitar. It is his goal to combine his range of music background with his ability to be an enthusiastic and devoted teacher. ------- We welcome Mr. Berry to the East Lansing Public Schools and to the Orchestra program! This past Friday, the High School Encore Strings traveled to Charlotte High School to take part in the State Level Michigan School Band and Orchestra Festival. The students gave a very moving and musical performance. The judges agreed by giving the ensemble a straight overall division one rating. The students received straight A’s in every category from two judges and straight A+’s from the third judge! This is the highest possible rating an ensemble can receive from the MSBOA organization at any festival. The school will receive a plaque for the performance, and each student will receive a medal.
