I have some exciting news about our High School Encore Strings 2018-19 season. The Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) has selected us to be a featured ensemble at the 2019 Michigan Music Conference (MMC)! This is the highest honor an ensemble can receive in the state of Michigan. We were selected by a panel of expert musicians and educators through a blind audition process. I submitted our 2018 MSBOA festival performance recording based on a recommendation from the judging panel. 41 ensembles applied and eight were selected to perform at the conference. The conference is attended by more than 9,000 music educators at the K-12, collegiate, and professional levels.
Our performance will take place from 11:00-11:45 a.m. on January 25, 2019 in DeVos Performance Hall, Grand Rapids. The concert will be a feature for our Encore Strings but will also highlight our orchestra program and school district. The performance will include; Mr. Rodney Page as a special guest; a short feature for some of our middle school string players; and a new work by a soon to be ELHS Alumnus, Joy Li. Please mark your calendars. I would like to extend a huge thank you and congratulations to this year’s Encore Strings ensemble (2017-18) especially our graduation seniors. We would not have been selected without their musicianship and leadership. Of course they will be invited back to listen to our performance and join us during our reception. The Encore Strings were fortunate to perform at the Michigan Music Conference in 2014 and it was an amazing experience. I am looking forward to our 2nd performance at MMC in 2019!

Congratulations to 7th, 8th, Chamber, Encore, and Symphonic Orchestras on their MSBOA District VIII Festival performances. All five orchestras received Division I ratings. These are the highest ratings an ensemble can receive at the festival. More importantly, each orchestra had many fine musical moments. I am very proud of all the work the students put into these performances. I think we made some fantastic musical memories. Finally, a big thank you to all the parents (ELBOPA) who helped us host the festival at the high school. We received many compliments from other schools. Bravo to everyone!
